What You Need to Know When Buying a New Carpet

new carpet

We have cleaned thousands of square feet of carpets during our 11-plus years in business. By doing so, I’ve learned a lot about carpet styles, colors, fibers, stain resistance, durability, and price. New carpeting doesn’t come cheap. You can easily spend several hundred dollars to carpet a room. For example, a living room can be 200-600+ square feet, and new carpeting typically costs $2-$4 and up per square foot. Then throw in carpet pad and installation and you’re likely to spend $500-$1,500+ on living room carpet alone, not to mention carpeting for the bedroom, game room, or man cave. Certainly, you want to protect the investment you make in your new carpet.

When Shopping for New Carpet, Buy Smart

If you’re in the market for new carpeting, do some research. As a result, you’ll be confident you’re making a well-informed purchasing decision. I recommend purchasing a durable, high-quality carpet. Not only will the new carpet look and perform well, it will save you money down the road. Unless you want a different style or color, you probably won’t need to replace it for decades. Although the upfront expense is usually higher for a premium carpet, you’ll realize a nice savings and great performance over its long lifespan.

Choose Nylon Carpet Over Polyester Carpet

When shopping for new carpeting, don’t just consider the price tag. Also consider the carpet’s durability, longevity, stain resistance and maybe most important, fiber type. I recommend investing in nylon carpet instead of polyester carpet. Although both look great and feel soft when they’re new, nylon carpet fibers will outlast polyester fibers. A polyester carpet will start showing wear (traffic lanes) within a year or two and will only last about 10 years. A nylon carpet will last 30-40 years.

Additionally, it’s easier to remove stains from a nylon carpet. Here’s why: polyester carpet is made from recycled plastic.  It may feel soft to the touch, but in essence, it is a plastic fiber.  The resiliency (bounce back) is much less than nylon fibers, thus the traffic lanes appear much sooner, appear dirtier and remain longer than nylon.  Furthermore, plastic is a petroleum-based product, and oil loves oil. Carpet stains in polyester fibers are hard to remove on your own. At NEW Solid Surface Cleaning, we use a special cleaning agent to lift greasy carpet stains from polyester carpets.

Safeguard Your Warranty with Professional Cleaning

New carpets typically come with 5- to 10-year warranties, but there’s a catch. Most carpet warranties require professional cleaning every 12-18 months. To maintain your carpet’s warranty, you need to show proof you complied with this cleaning requirement. To uphold your new carpet warranty, be sure to schedule professional carpet cleaning every year. Annual cleaning reduces the risk that you will be stuck paying out-of-pocket to replace your carpet, should it become stained or damaged. Plus, professional cleaning enables you and your family to enjoy a clean, allergen-free carpet without the fuss of shampooing it yourself.

5 Ways to Extend the Life of Your Carpet

Carpet before and after cleaning

Carpeting – it’s the surface where babies crawl, kids play, and families stretch out to watch movies. Carpets not only add comfort and warmth to a home, they also add beauty to the décor. To extend the life of your carpet, you need to take good care of it. Here are 5 ways to keep your carpeting looking great and feeling like new.

Routine Maintenance for Carpeting

  1. Vacuum Weekly
The simple act of vacuuming at least weekly picks up dust, dirt, crumbs, and pet hair. Thoroughly vacuuming with a quality vacuum will lift these solids, preventing them from fusing with the carpet fibers. Vacuuming is certainly worth the effort.
  2. Be Kind to Your Carpet
Your carpet’s best friend is the tried and true doormat. To reduce the amount of dirt you track indoors, wipe your shoes on a mat when you enter. Better yet, take off your shoes completely. At doorways and in high traffic areas, lay down rugs to protect the carpet underneath.
  3. Treat Stains Promptly
Nothing detracts from the beauty of a carpet more than a conspicuous, discolored spot. For food and drink stains, simply use hot water and a rag to dab at the stain. For hard-to-remove carpet stains, like Kool-Aid, wine, makeup, nail polish, or pet urine, be cautious. Using a homemade or over-the-counter stain remover carries the risk of setting the stain into the carpet fiber, potentially making it harder to remove. A set-in stain can change the molecular structure of the fiber, thereby affecting the carpet’s color. Bottom line, the longer a stain sits in the carpet, the longer it takes to get out. Your best bet is to call us as soon as you notice the stain.
  4. Work with Your Pets
If you’re a pet owner, train yourself and your pets to practice clean habits. For example, clean your dog’s paws after going for a walk and provide consistent potty breaks to reduce the number of accidents.
  5. Have Your Carpets Professionally Cleaned
A vacuum can only do so much. In contrast, the truck-mounted, hot-water extraction equipment we use at NEW Solid Surface Cleaning provides powerful wash and rinse capabilities. Our cleaning system removes deep dirt, carpet stains, and allergens. We recommend professional carpet cleaning every 6-18 months, depending on your carpet’s wear and tear. A home with kids and pets typically requires more frequent cleaning than a home with adults only.

10-year Anniversary Wisdom: Make People Happy

By Randy Grygiel, owner/operator of NEW Solid Surface Cleaning.

In October I celebrated the 10-year anniversary of NEW Solid Surface Cleaning. Where did the time go? It seems like yesterday I was begging for the phone to ring. How things have changed since 2009. As a new decade unfolds, I’d like to do a quick Q&A to take look back before charging ahead into 2020.

NEW Solid Surface Cleaning opened in 2009 as solo owner/operator with a portable cleaning unit. Now we have two work vans both equipped with powerful truck-mount systems.

Q & A with Randy Grygiel

I went through two bankruptcies with the same company. I decided it was time to work for and control my own future.
Do your research thoroughly. Ask a lot of questions! Make sure your business will be something you love to do. Work hard, and never give up.
In year 4-5 I started to see an uptick in business. The phone rang more. Repeat customers and word of mouth referrals really started to kick in. Once I made it over the 5-year hump, I never looked back. It is true that the first 5 years of business are tough.
I have a driving force to see that my business is successful. I was taught from an early age to do everything to the best of my ability. Do it right the first time. Don't cut corners. Above all, I truly like making people happy!
I have 2 favorites. My floors have never looked this clean, and you have such a positive attitude.
• Started with a portable cleaning unit as solo owner/operator • Now have 2 work vans both equipped with powerful truck-mount systems • Also offer (VLM) very low moisture cleaning for carpets • Grew to 3 employees with a seasonal fourth in the summer • Added the Just Gone System to completely remove all odors, allergens, viruses, mold and mildew • Certified in Natural Stone Restoration and Refinishing • Certified to apply specialty coatings to various floor surfaces
Thank you, thank you to all my customers, family and friends! I couldn't celebrate this 10-year anniversary without you.
